How Does the Tomatis Method Work?
Listening Clarity offers the Tomatis® Method in a portable program that can be taken in your home or office. You begin with an Initial Assessment (IA) and consultation with Len Young who is a Registered and Certified Tomatis Consultant (RCTC). The IA is given in one of two ways, in 1 ½ to 2 hours. If you are nearby, your IA may include a Tomatis Listening Test. If at a distance, your IA can be by phone or visually through Skype. Dr. Young individualizes your listening program to address your specific concerns and goals and provides you with the equipment, instructions, and additional processes to enhance your experience. You then run your program in the agreed and specified time provided.
You, or your child or family, listen two hours per day, fitting it into your daily schedule at the most convenient times. Listeners can move around while listening because the equipment either has a long cord on the headphones or runs on a battery hands free. In fact, most listeners enjoy their listening time as they can draw, paint, play games, work puzzles, have conversations, or cook during their programs.
After the Initial Assessment (IA), the minimal program is 60 hours of listening
over several months. The IA and program are described in more detail below.
- Takes about an hour and a half
- Includes a series of tests if in person
- Entails a detailed personal history
- Includes a discussion of your current listening levels and a related consultation
Minimal Program of 60 Hours of Listening:
- A 15-day listening period, two hours each day
- A break of 3-6 weeks depending on equipment availability
- A second 15-day listening period, two hours each day
- You listen to classical music with a full range of sound, primarily
Mozart—music that possesses stimulating overtones and develops
thinking and rhythm abilities thereby improving how you listen,
focus, think, remember, learn, and communicate.
With the Mini-Electronic Ear, you experience a passive and
active phase using the microphone to train your voice.
Solisten offers the passive phase with the option of
the Mini-EE for follow-up voice work.
- Clients communicate with Dr. Young regularly during
their programs by phone and email.
- Clients with greater needs may opt for additional listening hours beyond the 60 hour program.
- This relates to more severe behavior, speech or attention concerns.
- Once the program is completed, your ears continue to change over the next year and a half.
There are two equipment options.
Mini-Electronic Ear (EE)
The Electronic Ear is the patented electronic device developed by Dr. Alfred A. Tomatis to provide the Tomatis Method. In 1999 his son, Christian Tomatis, and Thierry Gaujarengues developed the portable Mini-Electronic Ear. Solisten® was introduced in 2009. With classical music, mainly Mozart, and Gregorian chant, the Electronic Ear focuses attention to a client’s weak sounds through gating and filtering mechanisms that stimulate the ear to perceive those sounds. The Mini-EE gates sound between the left and right ears to strengthen right ear dominance, and it works on balance (Learn more www.tomatis.com). Listening Clarity uses the patented Mini-Electronic Ear and Solisten.
Solisten is the portable, digital touch screen device that offers an educational application of the Tomatis sound training programs. There are two Solistens. One offers pre-programmed, pre-set programs with specific aspects of the Tomatis Method and the Electronic Ear. These programs provide the Tomatis Effect that includes the unique
Tomatis gating, delay and precession, proprietary chosen music with some filtered levels, and the Tomatis bone and air conductions.
The Solisten TC looks like the Solisten device and is available only to a Tomatis Consultant (Level 3) to program individual programs for clients.
Both Solisten devices provide the passive phase of the Tomatis Method.
